Being a naturopathic and herbal medicine college student, I am very conscious about how food is grown and it’s role in good nutrition. So I did my research on finding the best organic macadamia nuts in New Zealand and decided upon Torere macadamias. My order was fast to arrive at my doorstep and was carefully packaged. So glad I chose them! The taste is just so satisfying. Crunchy and flavourful! No rancid oil taste and smell. I opted for the natural ones and they were so fresh and delicious even without any seasoning. I just received my second order and this time I purchased the 5kg bulk pack because once you start, you really can’t stop. Good thing they’re full of healthy fats and protein that are good for your body. I don’t eat any other nuts now. Try them and you’ll taste the difference. =)

I am presently establishing a macadamia orchard in Westport. Macadamia orchards are new to the district and consequently, there is no local information or experience to consult with. The information on macadamia varieties, their habit and conditions preference that Torere have provided, has been invaluable. They have provided extensive fact sheets on varieties and have been very willing to spend the time to verbally discuss and advise on all aspects of variety suitability. So far, I have had two separate consignments from Torere and all plants arrived well started and in good condition. Working in a relatively remote part of the country, I am well aware of transport difficulties and so it appears is Torere; as they make contact after scheduled delivery date to get feedback on arrival condition of the plants. I am continuing to expand my orchard and have no intention of using any other supplier.

Working with Torere Macadamias,
When we retired in 2016 we were looking around to find something to do on our block of land – something that would keep us fit and involved, but not too much of a tie. We saw an article on Vanessa and Rod and their work with Macadamias in our local newspaper, and our first experience in dealing with Vanessa was a very professional PowerPoint – accompanied by tea and Macadamia Brittle.
We put in our first order for enough trees to occupy one hectare immediately. Vanessa and her team put in the extra hours to graft these up at the very end of the grafting season. We went to the informative field day up at Torere.
This hectare block is now planted and our trees look very healthy. Since every site is different we have enjoyed the challenge of trying out different ways to do things, and are very pleased with our efforts so far. Of course it’s early days for us, but we have found Rod and Vanessa very encouraging and generous with their advice – for example, tree combinations for our block have been selected by Vanessa. This has given us the confidence to plan to put in another hectare next year.
Working with Torere has been a very positive experience.

We have found Vanessa and Rod to be very friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. We came to macadamia nut farming in the opposite way too many people. We were firstly sold on the idea (partly as a result of attending the Torere seminar) and then looked for suitable land, located in Putauaki, Whakatane District. Vanessa and Rod helped us by answering our queries on the growing conditions required, so we knew the correct contour, soil and weather requirements for the macadamias. Having read the Australian Macadamia Nut Growers Guide, we had many questions as to how macadamias grow in New Zealand conditions. Vanessa has perfected the method of grafting and the best tree varieties to use. The droppers make for easy harvesting and it is a joy to behold the Torere site and dream of what our orchard may become. Rod and Vanessa have helped us design our crop plan for the type and layout of 1200 trees to go on the site and are there to support us in the future. We feel privileged to be working with such a warm, supportive and knowledgeable couple. We are a passionate couple who want to grow the best batch of macadamias we can!

We had been thinking of what to grow on our lifestyle block in the Appleby, Nelson area. After a few trial and errors, we finally decided on a variety of nuts with Macadamia’s being the main crop. On a trip to the North Island we dropped into the Torere Mac nursery and were given a very extensive, informative tour, heaps of advice freely given and all aspects of planting through to harvesting covered. We also were invited to look around the factory in town, which we did. Consequently, we were sold!!
We were advised what varieties would do well in our area and the order was placed. The trees arrived as promised and what beautiful, healthy specimens they were.
They were duly planted and have grown several inches. All of them survived their first winter and are now on to the second.
We couldn’t have been more impressed and pleased with the product and service we received from Torere Macadamias.

Pahine Farms contacted Torere Macadamias in 2014 enquiring about setting up a macadamia orchard in coastal South Auckland.

Vanessa Hayes at Torere was the most helpful of the tree suppliers that we contacted, answering all of our initial questions and suggesting we attend one of their free field-days at their nursery in beautiful Opotiki.
The day at the orchard gave us some insights into growing macadamias, the fruiting habits, harvesting challenges, husking and cracking of the nuts – and the tastes. We were inspired enough to invest in three different Torere hybrids for our orchard. These trees were grown to order and delivered in a timely manner when required.
Torere Macadamias have been very supportive of our endeavours, and we look forward to working with them in the future as our trees come into production and some marketing alliances are forged.

In Autumn 2016 we received a consignment of trees from Torere that had been ordered some time previously. The trees were healthy and arrived in good order but within a couple of months we’d been hit with unusually heavy frosts (we don’t expect -4c in our area) and 35 trees died. I explained the situation to Vanessa and she was able to cast around and find 35 replacement trees for us to plant in the spring. It was a huge help for us to get replacements so quickly. In dealing with Torere you get to draw on their experience about what varieties to plant. Sometimes the trees you want must be grafted to order so there is a wait – but when they arrive you can count on the trees being healthy, vigorous and ready to take off.
